What were scalawags?
Southern republicans.
Many whites in the South felt that any southerners who helped the republicans were traitors.
What were carpetbaggers?
Northerners who came to the South after the war.
Southerners jested that these northerns were in such a hurry to move south that they had time only to fling a few clothes into cheap suitcases, or cArPeTbAgS.
Why did northerns move south?
- A few did hope to profit as South rebuilt
- Many were Union soldiers who grew to love South’s rich land
- Others were teachers, ministers, and reforms who wanted to help the freedmen
How did African American partake in politics?
During reconstruction, they voted in large numbers and they ran and were elected to public office in the South. African Americans became sheriffs, mayors, and legislators in the new state and local governments.

He became the nations first black senator in 1870. He completed the unfinished term of Jefferson Davis.

What was the Conservatives view on Reconstruction?
They were willing to let African Americans vote and hold a few offices. Still, they were determined that real power would remain in the hands of whites.

They tried to force African Americans back into plantations

What caused the KKK to “stop” their actions? What effect did the KKK have on African Americans?
In 1870, Congress made it illegal to use force to keep people from voting. Although KKK activities stopped, the threat of violence still remained. Some African Americans were frightened away from the ballot box.
Rebuilding cost money. Reconstruction governments raised taxes sharply. Why didn’t people like this?
Many former confederate officers and officials were denied voting rights during reconstruction and thus being taxed without representation. The tax increase also caused some landowners to lose their land.
