who is this CPG intended for?
Adult paitents with diagnosed diabetes who have fully recovered from an episode of hypoglycemia
what can cause/trigger a hypoglycemia epsidoe?
missed meal, strenuopus exercise, or poorly controlled diabetes
why do oral hypoglycemicsa cause hypoglycemia in some paitents?
they have a long duration of action- there is a risk to leave these paitents at home
what should be done with people who have OD on their medications and why?
transported to hopsital as they need an investigation into why it happened
what other serious conditions can trigger hypoglycemia?
drug/alcohol use, liver or endocrine diseas,, turmor or malnurishment
what should be given to the paitent after resotring their glucose levels?
a longer acting carbohydrate such as a sandwhich, dried fruit or yoghurt
what are some approriate sources of glucose in hypoglycemic episode?
6-7 jelly beans, 1 tablespoon honey, 200ml fruit juice, 150-200ml soft drink, 20g glucose paste
what should we tell the paitent to do within 24 hours?
advise their usual diabetes provider about their episode particularly if they are becoming more frequent
what is include in the stop box where we cant proceed?
incomplete recovory risk of prolonged or recurrent hypoglycemia - unwtnessed onset, paitent on oral hypoglycemias, unable to eat further carbs, unable to be monitored for 4 hours - no diagnosis of diabtes suspected cause needing investgation injury or seizure pregnancy
- provide with informatrion sheet
refer pt to diabetes primary care provider withing 24 hpurs
what needs to be done prior to departing the scene?
confirm BGL > 4 and remains normal after at least 10 minutes
remove cannula
confirm pt / carer understands the advice
