What is the mode of action?
Sodium channel blocker- interrupts impulse conduction in peripheral nerves and stabilises editable cell membranes
What are the contraindications?
Know hypersensitivity to lidocaine or related local anaesthetics
-bupivacaine, levobupivacain, prilocaine and ropivacaine
What are the precautions?
IM and local infiltration- inadvertent intravascular administration may result in systemic toxicity.
IO- impaired CV function
what are the adverse effects?
Allergic reactions are rare but may present as localises oedema, urticaria, bronchospasm and anaphylaxis
What are the sings of systemic toxicity?
CNS: tinnitus, blurred vison, sudden change in consciousness, afgitation, convulsions
CV: Hypotension, bradycardia, arythmias, cardiac arrest
What is the presentation?
50mg in 5ml ampule
What is the onset and duration of action?
1-5 minutes infiltration
5-15 minutes other routes
Duration 1-1.5 hours
