What is the mode of action?

A

Dopamine antagonist- antiemetic effects are primarily due to D2 receptor blockage. Also acts on other neurotransmitter systems including histaminic, cholinergic and alpha adrenaline receptors.

What are the indications?

A

Nausea and vomiting in paitents 21 and over specifically for

  • allergy/contra ondansetrone and vestibular nausea
  • Headache

A

CNS depression (unconcious or sevre intoxicated)

What are the precautions?

A

Children and young adults more suseptible to extrapyramidal symtoms. Avoid use in paitens <21
Elderly paitnets- more suseptable to advrse effects.
Parkinsons disease- can worse symptoms of parkinsons, avoid if possible

A

CNS sedatiion and blurred vison
CV posterial hypotension, QT prolongation (rare)
Extrapyramadal reactions

Is it safe to use with pregant and breast feeding?

A

Pregnant- yes if administered in approved doses. High/prologned doses in later preganacy may increase risk of withdrawl effects in newborn

Breastfeed- yes

A

12.5mg in 1ml
IM
Onset- 10-20 minutes
Duration - 3-4 hours

ampuole needs protection from the light

Solution should be white or pale yellow-dark yellow should not be administered
