The Skeletal System (Axial) Pt. 1 Flashcards
How many bones structure the axial skeleton?
Structured from 80 bones
What does the axial skeleton form?
Forms the long axis of the body
What bones are included in the axial skeleton? (3)
- Bones of the skull
- Vertebral column
- Rib cage
What are sutures?
Interlocking joints that firmly unite all the bones of the adult skull
What kind of appearance do suture lines have? (2)
Have a sawtooth or serrated appearance
What are the four major skull sutures? (4)
- Coronal
- Sagittal
- Squamous
- Lambdoid
What does the frontal bone form? (first 2)
- Forehead
- Bony projections under the eyebrows
- Superior part of each eye’s orbit
What does the frontal bone form around the eye?
The superior part of each eye’s orbit
What does foramen magnum mean?
Means large hole
Where is the foramen magnum found?
The base of the occipital bone
What does the foramen magnum surround?
Surrounds the lower part of the brain
What does the foramen magnum allow for with the brain?
Allows the spinal cord to connect with the brain
What are occipital condyles and where are they found?
Rocker-like and lateral to (on each side of) the foramen
Where do the occipital condyles rest?
Rest on the first vertebra of the spinal column (atlas)
What kind of shape does a sphenoid bone have? What does it span? (2)
- Has a butterfly shape
- Spans the width of the skull
What does the sphenoid bone form?
Forms part of the floor of the cranial cavity
What does sella turcica mean?
Turk’s saddle
What is the sella turcica? What is it in the middle of?
A small depression in the middle of the sphenoid bone
What is held in place at the sella turcica?
The pituitary gland is held in place there
What is the crista galli Latin for?
Latin for cock’s comb
Where does the crista galli project from?
Projects from its superior surface
What attaches to the crista galli?
The outer most covering of the brain attaches to this projection
What are cribriform plates?
The small holes on each side of the crista galli
What do the cribriform plates allow for?
Allow nerve fibers carrying impulses from the olfactory (smell) receptors of the nose to reach the brain
How many bones comprise the facial bones?
14 bones that comprise the facial bones
How many facial bones are paired?
12 bones are paired
What are the two singles bones of the face? (2)
- Mandible
- Vomer
What are the mandible and vomer?
Two single bones of the face
What is another name for maxillae?
Maxillary bones
What is another name for maxillary bones?
Maxillae
What fuses to form forms the upper jaw?
The two maxillae (maxillary bones) fuse to form the upper jaw
What do the two maxillae fuse to form?
Fuse to form the upper jaw
What is maxillae (maxillary bones)?
The main bones of the face
What do the maxillae (maxillary bones) carry and where? (2)
- Carry the upper teeth
- In the alveolar margin
Where do the paired palatine bones lie and next to what?
The paired palatine bones lie posterior to the palatine processes of the maxillae
What do the palatine bones form?
Form the posterior part of the hard palate
What causes a cleft palate?
Failure of palatine bones or the palatine processes to fuse medially
What are the nasal bones? What do they form?
Small rectangular bones that form the bridge of the nose
What is the inferior conchae? What do they project from?
Thin curved bones projecting from the lateral walls of the nasal cavity
What is the inferior conchae part of?
Part of the ethmoid bone
What is the hyoid bone not part of?
Not part of the skull
What is the hyoid bone closely related to?
Closely related to the mandible and temporal bones
What doesn’t the hyoid bone do?
Doesn’t articulate directly with any other bone
