Structures related to the Ovary Flashcards
4 Ligaments
Ovarian Ligament
Suspensory Ligament
Broad Ligament
Round Ligament
Suspensory Ligament
Assists the ovarian ligament
Broad Ligagment
Holds the ovary in the proper orientation
Uterine Vessels
Branches to the fallopian tube and the ovary on either side
Epoophoron
Remant of the embryonic mesonephric tubules and mesonephric duct
Located within the broad ligament btwn the ovary and the fallopian tubes
Fimbriae
Fringe like extensions of the fallopian tube
Sweeps the ova into the fallopian tube by creating a current
Ampulla of the fallopian tube
Follows after the fimbriae, part of the tube
Tubal Pregnancy
Occurs if a fertilized egg does not move into the uterus, establishes a viable placenta
Will not result in a full-term pregnancy because the fallopian tube can not expand.
3 regions of the Uterus
Fundus, body of the urters, the cervis
Fundus
The uppermost portion extends btw the openings fallopian tubes on each side
Body of the uterus
Comprises the greatest mass
Cervix
Extends into the uppermost portion of the vagina
Uterus
Composed of a very thick wall of smooth muscle (Myometrium) with a lining (the Endometrium) of simple columnar epithelium that forms deep galnds with an extensive blood supply.
Endometrium
Inner segment is shed with each menstrual cycle, renewing the enviornment each time for an anticipated pregancy
Myometrium
Provides much of the force required for delivery of the fetus
