Embyrological Frontal bone
Is actually two parts instead of one, but may remain two even as an adult
Mandible
Lower jaw that is freely movable
Coronal Sutures
located in the coronal plane btwn the frontal and parietal bones
Lambdoidal Suture
btwn parietal and occipital bones,
Lamda = triangle shape
Squamosal Suture
Btwn the parietal and temporal bones
Zygomatic bones
Cheek bones unite temporal bones with maxillae bones
Maxillae or maxillary bone
Of the upper jaw
Zygomatic arch
Formed by the union of the zygomatic and temporal bones
Provide strong attachment of muscles of the jaw
Condyle
of the mandible unites with the temporal bone
Form temproromandibular Joint (TMJ)
Coronoid Process
of the mandible
Powerful temporalis muscle of the skull attach, acting to close the jaw
Sinuses
Air cavities
Found in the mastoid process of the temporal bone, maxillary bones, frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones = risk of infection here
Styloid Porcess of the Temporal Bone
Long slender, pen-like projection of bone
External Aduitory Meatus
Is the opening in the temporal bone for the transmisssion of sound waves to the tympanic membrane (ear drum)
