Histology of the Pancreas Flashcards
Pancrease
Dual function, exorcrine and endocrine gland
located retroperitoneal, behind the peritoneuem of the posterior abdominal wall.
over 6 inches
Septa of connective tissue
seperates the highly lobulated tissue
Exocrine pancreas
Secretes digestive enzyme precursors into the duodenum through the main pancreatic duct
Acini
Clustered, spherical groups of exocrine cells, BULK of pancreatic mass
Acinar cells
Pyramidal in shape with the apex of each cell facing the central duct and the nucleus positioned near the base
Centro acinar cells
Small pale seen in the central part of an acinus
Grouped around the start of the intercalated duct
Intercalated Duct
Drains the Acinus
Intralobular Ducts
Coalesced group of small intercalated ducts
Interlobar Ducts
Drain intralobular ducts
Islets of Langerhans
Endorcrine portion of the pancreas
displaying various sizes and contours
Alpha cells
20% of islet mass and produce glucagon
Glucagon
Causes glycogen break down with the subsequent release of glucose into the blood stream
Beta Cells
75% of islet mass
Responsible for production of insulin
Insulin
acts to lower blood glucose and encourages the formation of glycogen within the liver and muscle tissues
Diabetes mellitus
Insufficient production of insulin
