Histology of Bone Tissue (Haversian system) Flashcards
Matrix of compact bone
Is made of concentric layers of bone tissue
Lamellae
Circular plates of bone tissue, having an apparearance of laminated wood or in rings in a tree
Haversian Canals
Contain, VAN and lymphatic vessels
Lamellae layers surround the canals
Osteocytes
Bone cells
Lacunae (nests)
Where osteocytes are housed in small cavities
Canaliculi (Little canals)
Small cavities in the bone matrix in which osteocytes are connected with other osteocytes
Contain cytoplasmic cell processes of the osteocytes
Allow for metabolites to difuse btwn the bloood vessels and bone tissue
Embryological Bone
Composed of hyalin cartilage -> immature bone tissue -> mature bone tissue
Bone tissue repair
When a fracture occurs, the progression of tissue repair reflects the devo previously seen in the embryo, cartilage is formed first, to be replaced by immature, disorganized bone, then organized mature bone
Lymphatic vessels in bone
Two functions
Excess tissue fliud is removed.
Abnormal growth occurs in cells or marrow, may spread to other segments via the veins of lymphatic vessels
Or may be brought to bones by cancers in other areas.
