Lecture 3 (Female Reproductive System and the Breast) Flashcards
Germinal Epithelium
THought to be the start of the primordial follices
True source of eggs were in the embryonic yolk sac, Go into the abdomen to form ovary
300,000 eggs from start
Common place for cancer to start
Egg Cycle
Primordial follicles -> primary follicles -> secondary follicles -> graafian (mature) follicles -> corpus luteum (yellow body) produces estrogen and progesterone -> corpus albicans (white body) -> Coron radiata the outsid of the egg
Corpus Luteum
Produces hromones for placenta and for it to grow in the 1st trimester
Ovulation
Eggs are released about mid cycle not always 28 days long
Alternating Ovulation
Ovaries are thought to do this, so each ovary ovulates every 70 days
Ova’s ovulated
about 400 in a lifetime
Atretic follicles
Follicles that begin development but atrophy
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Occurs when infection in the skin around the vagina goes through into the abdomen via the fallopian tube
Ectopic Pregnancy
Ectopic tubal pregnancy (fallopian tubule)
Abodominal pain, rupture of the tube
Cause massive bleeding and may die
Fallopian tube Ligation (tubes tied)
Tubuals are tied off and cut
Doesnt work perfectly, sperm can get pass small holes
Infertility in men
enzymes are not good enough or not enough sperm
Ovarian Cysts
Very common
Happens you have secondary follicles with fluid in them
Several stages there are fluid filled spaces
Can be large, painful, causes bleeding
Ovarian Cancer
Tendency to spread
Throughout the abdomen stomach, color
Tend to be discouraged after metastasis
Uterus
Menstral cramps
Smooth muscle of uterus contracts = labor
Cervix becomes dialated and then deliver the baby
Baby will sit on the urinary bladder in the last trimester = peeing all the time
Uterian Cancer
Common
Papanicolaou smear of the cervix (PAP)
Takes cells off the cervix
