Kidney (Longitudinal section, including the Blood Supply) Flashcards
Capsule
Fiborous
Surrounds the kidney
Renal Cortext
Highly Vascular, dark red
Where elements of the urine are first formed
Renal Medulla
Core of the organ
Deep to the cortext
Includes numerous urinary tubules resposible for transporting urine out of the kidney
Renal Pyramids
Large Urinary tubules that form triangular bundles
Renal Papilla
Nipple shaped apex that drains the renal pyramids
Minor Calyx
Funnel like small cup that drains the renal papilla
Major Calyx
Drain the minor calyces
Renal Pevlis
Drain the major calyx
Ureter
Drains the renal pelvis,
brings urine to the urinary bladder
Composed of 3 layers of smooth muscles with a lining of urine-proof transitional epithelium
Ureter Path
Begins on the medial surface of the kidney, decends posterior to the abdominal peritoneum and passes over the common illiac vessels before penetrating the posterior wall of the urinary bladder
Renal Arteries
Bring about 1 liter of blood per minute, 20% of blood volume to the kidneys
Situated above the renal vein
Interlobar Arteries
Three branches that come off the renal artery
Supply each of the three embryonic lobes of the kidney
Enter the Hilum of the kidney
Two branches Anterior
One branch Posterior to the renal pelvis
Arcuate (Arched) Arteries
Branch of the interlobular Arteries
At the junction of the Medulla and cortext
Run parallel to the surface of the kidney
Interlobular Arteries
Further branch of the arcuate arteries
Close to the surface of the kidney
Afferent Arterioles
Further branch of interlobular arteries
Bring arriving blood to the glomeruli/ glomerulus
