- minimal number of people in/out
2
Q
how do you package instruments
A
- instruments mjust be dry
- Jointed instruments left in an open position
- cover sharp edges with gauze
- can autoclave uwrapped for immediate use
3
Q
What is the autoclave wrapping material like?
A
- Porous to steam but tightly woven to prevent entrance of dust/ microbes
- Resistant to heat and physical damage
4
Q
How does steam sterilisation work?
A
- Autoclave
- Kills micro-organisms through coagulation and denaturation of proteins
- balance of steam, pressure, temperature and time
- there are various types depending on how they produce steam and how they circulate it
5
Q
How does a pre-vaccuum autoclave work?
A
- Two chambers (inner and outer)
- Vaccuum removes air from the inner chamber and replaces it with steam
- 132 for 3-4 minutes as the minimum time (unwrapped, flash sterilisation)
6
Q
How does a gravity displacement autoclave work?
A
- Steam is lighter than air, steam enters the top and then displaces the heavier air
- Air can be trapped in hollow objects, reduces the effectiveness
- 120 for 13 minutes as the minimum
7
Q
What is the minimum drying time for an autoclave?
A
15-30 minutes
8
Q
What are the indicators of sterilisation?
A
- Chemical indicators
- TST, strips, tape
9
Q
What action can you do with the wound?
A
- Swab
- Culture and Sensitivity
- Debride necrotic tissue
- Consider the removal of implants
- Information needed for cytology wound
