Antimicrobials 2 Flashcards
What is a category A antimicrobial?
Avoid
What is a category B antimicrobial?
Restrict
What is a category C antimicrobial?
Caution
What is a category D antimicrobial?
Prudence
What are the four main mechanisms of action of antibacterials?
- Inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Damage bacterial cell wall integrity/ function
- Inhibit nucleic acid synthesis or function
- Inhibit protein synthesis
What do B-lactam antibiotics do?
inhibit bacterial growth by interfering with the transpeptidation of bacterial wall synthesis
What are the class D B-lactam antibiotics?
- Natural penicillins
- Aminopenicillins
- Anti-staph penicillins
What are the class C Aminopenicillins?
Aminopenicillins in combination with B-lactamase inhibitors e.g amoxicillin and clauvulanic acid
What is amoxicillin licensed for?
the treatment of primary infections of the urogenital tract, e.g pyelenphritis
What is the function of tetracycline?
Inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria?
What is doxycycline licensed for?
treatment of rhinitis and bronchopneumonia in cats and dogs
What is the function of sulfonamides and DRI’s
- Bacteriacidal
- Time-Dependent
- Broad Spectrum of activity
- Serious side effects are uncommon
What is TMPS?
relatively cheap and easy to administrate to horses, used to treat infections of the upper respiratory tract, urogenital system and wound infections
What is the nitroimidazoles function?
Inhibits nucleic acid function by preventing DNA repair
