nutritional support of dermatological patients Flashcards
What percentage of an animals protein is in the skin?
24% of the body weight is in the new-born puppy
What percentage of an animals hair is protein?
90%
What percentage of the skin/coat is protein?
30-35%
What four things may cause pruritis?
- External parasites and infectious causes
- Environmental atopic dermatitis
- Nutrient intolerance
- Endocrine or auto-immune
What is atopy?
- Inflammatory and pruritic skin disease
- Grass, pollen, dust, feathers, mould
What is the most common protein size?
15-40kDa
* Too large and the protein wont cross the gut barrier and be digested
* Too small and the protein wont be recognised and sufficient to trigger a reaction
What is the only reliable method to help identify a nutrient intolerance in dogs and cats?
- Feed an appropriate exclusion diet for 6-8 weeks
- There are two types of exclusion diets available
- Novel protein
- Hydrolysed Protein
What are the advantages of novel protein diet?
- Diets are cheaper
- Less processing is involved
What are the disadvantages of the novel protein diet?
- Need to acquire a detailed history
- difficult to find a suitable diet
- Longer trials so client compliance diminishes over time
- Potential oif AFR developing to this protein source overtime
What are the advantages of a hydrolysed diet?
- Shorter trial so it’s less likely for compliance to drop
- Easier to run the trial
- Reduced likelihood for an adverse reaction to the diet
What are the disadvantages of a hydrolysed diet?
- Expensive
- Very few wet options
- Palatability
What do you need to remove to run a succesful elimination diet?
- Prescription medication
- Supplements
- Dental Products and toothpaste
- Treats
- Human foods
- Outside world
