Somatosensory Flashcards
Definition: taking physical energy and putting it into electrical energy which will eventually cause an action potential
transection
What are the types of somatosensory receptors?
capsulated and unencapsulated
What are the unencapsulated receptors?
free nerve endings
merkel’s
What are free nerve endings responsible for?
pain and temperature
What are merkel’s receptors responsible for?
tactile discrimination (ex: braille)
What are the capsulated sensory receptors?
- pacinian
- muscle spindles
- GTO
- ruffini corpuscule
- meissner’s corpuscle
What are the pacinian sensory receptors responsible for?
vibration and changing stimuli (found in the dermis)
What are the ruffini corpuscles responsible for?
picking up the stretching of the skin
What are meissner’s corpuscles responsible for?
vibration and a initial contact of a stimuli to the skin
definition: the area of skin that stimulates the receptor found underneath the surface
receptive field
definition: 2-point discrimination with location of the stimulus… stimulus intensity is greater in the receptor closest to it
inhibitory surround
What type of skin has no hairs? Where is it found on the body?
glabrous skin… it is found on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands
What are the functions of the dorsal column system/medial lemniscus?
- discriminative/fine touch
- vibration
- joint position
What are the functions of the anterolateral system?
- crude touch
- temperature
- pain
The anterolateral system contains (small/large)-diameter fibers
small diameter
