What is a lever?
In your body, the term ‘lever’ refers to a system of muscles and bones working together too bring about a movement
What are the 4 parts involved in a lever called?
- Fulcrum
- Load
- Effort
- Lever arm
When drawing a diagram of a lever what does the: square, triangle, arrow and long rectangle represent?
Square = Load
Triangle = Fulcrum
Arrow = Effort
Long rectangle = Lever arm
What are the 3 different types of levers?
- First class levers
- Second class levers
- Third class levers
What is a first class lever?
A lever where the fulcrum is in the middle
What is a second class lever?
A lever where the load is in the middle
What is a third class lever?
A lever where the effort is in the middle
What are 2 examples of first class levers?
- Tricep dips
- Nodding your head
What are 2 examples of second class levers?
- Calf raises
- Lifting a wheelbarrow
What are 2 examples of third class levers?
- A bicep curl
- Using a spade
What is a mechanical advantage?
A lever that can lift a large load with a relatively small amount of effort
What is a mechanical disadvantage?
A third class lever that cannot lift as heavy of a load with the same amount of effort as a different lever
