Soc16 The Structure Of The Blood Vessels Flashcards
Which way do the Arteries carry blood?
Arteries carry blood away from the heart
Why do arteries have thick and elastic walls?
They carry oxygenated blood which means the walls of the artery are maintaining high amounts of pressure
Why is the Lumen of the arterie able to widen?
So the arterie can allow more blood flow through when you exercise so it can reach the working muscles
How is the pulmonary artery different to normal arteries?
It carries deoxygenated blood
Which way do veins carry the blood?
Veins carry the blood into the heart
Why do veins have much thinner and less elastic walls?
As they carry deoxygenated blood so the walls are at much less pressure
Why do veins contain many valves?
To help deoxygenated blood flow into the heart and not flow back in the wrong direction
What is the route of blood coming into the heart and leaving the heart?
1) Deoxygenated blood comes into the heart through the vena cava
2) The blood enters the right atrium
3) The blood enters the right ventricle through the Tricuspid valve
4) The heart enters the Pulmonary Artery through the semilunar valve
5) The Pulmonary artery takes the blood to the lungs to get oxygenated
6) The oxygenated blood enters back from the lungs to the heart through the Pulmonary Vein
7) The blood enters the left atrium
8) The blood enters the left ventricle through the Bicuspid valve
9) The blood leaves the left ventricle through the semilunar valve
10) The blood leaves the aorta to transport around the body
What does the vena cava do?
Brings deoxygenated blood back from the body into the heart
What does the Pulmonary artery do?
Takes deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs to get oxygenated
What does the pulmonary vein do?
Takes the oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart
What do red blood cells do?
Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the bodys cells, and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs
What do white blood cells do?
White blood cells produce antibodies to fight against infection and diseases
What do platelets do?
Platelets clump together to help the blood clot and stop bleeding if a blood vessel is cut
What does plasma do?
The main role of plasma is to take oxygen, nutrients, hormones and proteins to the parts of the body that need it
