Soc18 Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise And Energy Sources Flashcards
What is glucose?
A major source of energy for most cells in the body
What is aerobic respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose using oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose without oxygen
What is aerobic exercise?
Working at a moderate intensity allowing the body time to utilise oxygen and energy production to work for a continuous period
What is lactic acid?
A colourless acid produced in a muscle tissue during strenous exercise when the body is exercising anaerobically at high intensity
What is cramp?
Painful, involuntary contraction of a muscle usually causes by fatigue
What is anaerobic exercise?
Anaerobic exercise activities are usually short but intense e.g sprinting, lifting weights and jumping
What are the 2 main sources of energy for our body?
Carbohydrates and fats
Do fats provide energy for long or short periods of time?
Long periods of time
Why does your body use carbohydrates as the ‘first source of energy’?
As carbohydrates can only be stored in small amounts that are enough to last 1-2 days, so your body uses these first for energy
What are fats broken down into inside the body?
Fats are broken down into fatty acids
What are complex carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates that are found in natural foods such as brown rice, wholemeal bread and wholemeal pasta
Are complex carbohydrates long or short lasting?
Comples carbohydrates are long lasting and are slow releasing
What are simple carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates that are stored in their natural form in fruit and vegetables, and in their refined form in buscuits, cakes and chocolates
Are simple carbs long or short lasting?
They are short lasting and provice a quick burst of energy
