Soc15 The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the cardio-respiratory system?
The interaction of the heart and the lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise
What is the cardiovascular system?
It is to do with the heart, blood and blood vessels together.
Cardio means heart and vascular means blood vessels
What is vasodilation?
When veins swell up or dilate; widening the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to allow increased blood flow
What is vasoconstriction?
When veins shrink down; narrowing the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to decrease blood flow
What is vascular shunting?
A process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from inactive areas; achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction
What are the main functions of the cardiovascular system?
- The heart pumps oxygen around the body, to help respiration and production of energy in cells.
- Helps too clot the blood
- Controls the bodys temprature
- If you get too hot, your blood vessels get bigger (vasodilation)
- If you get too cold, your blood vessels get smaller (vasoconstriction)
