Soc17 The Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What body parts are involved in the Respiratory System?
The respiratory system includes the nose, mouth, throat, voice box, windpipe, lungs and blood vessels
What are 3 reasons for the Respiratory System?
- To get oxygen into the body
- To remove carbon dioxide from the body
- To supply oxygen to the working muscles
What is the rates of inspiration (Breathing in)?
20% oxygen + 0.4% carbon dioxide
What are the rates of Exhalation (Breathing Out)?
16% oxygen + 4% carbon dioxide
What is respiration?
The movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues
What are the 5 main parts inside the body involved in gaseous exchange?
- The diaphragm
- The trachea
- The bronchus
- The bronchioles
- The alveoli
What is the diaphragm?
The primary muscle used in the process of inspiration or inhalation. A dome-shaped sheet of muscle that seperates the chest from the rest of the body cavity.
What is the trachea?
The tube that takes air into the chest, also known as the windpipe
What is the bronchus? (Plural = Bronchi)
A tube which air passes from the trachea into the lungs
What is the bronchus? (Plural = Bronchi)
A tube which air passes from the trachea into the lungs
What is the bronchioles?
Smaller branches coming off the bronchus with alveoli on the end
What is the alveoli?
Tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange takes place
What is a haemoglobin?
A type of protein found in every red blood cell
What is gaseous exchange?
The delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and the removal of carbon dioxide from the tissues
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down any lactic acid
