Why do people take peformance enhancing drugs?
- Improve their peformance
- Some people are encouraged to do so by their coaches or fellow athletes
- The reward of winning (e.g gold medal)
- Pressure
What are anabolic steroids?
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscles growth.
What are the benefits of anabolic steroids?
Taken to increase muscles mass and develop bone growth, therefore increasing strength while at the same time allowing the athlete to train harder and recover quicker.
What are the side effects of anabolic steroids?
Increased risk of muscle injury, increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, high blood pressure and even death!
What are beta blockers?
Drugs that are used to control the heart rate and have a calming and relaxing effect.
What are the benefits of beta blockers?
Beta blockers can help targets sports where steadiness and precision are required, because they reduce heart rate.
What are the side effects of beta blockers?
Nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness, depression, insomnia and nightmares
What are Duiretics?
Drugs that elevate the rate of urine production
What are the benefites of Duiretics?
These can help peformers who need to loose weight (e.g boxers) and can reduce the amount of other banned substances in urine
What are the side effects of Duiretics?
Dehydration and dizziness
What are Narcotic analgesics?
Drugs that reduce pain in the body
What are the benefits of Narcotic analgesics?
Can give relief from painful injuries, allowing athletes to play on for a while if slightly injured (e.g if a player is slightly injured before the world cup final)
What are the side effects of Narcotic analgesics?
Loss of coordination, loss of balance, loss of concentration and emotional effects
What are peptide hormones?
Drugs that increase production of red blood cells
What are the benefits of Peptide hormones?
Can increase muscle growth and assist in muscle recovery
