Why do we perform a warm-up?
Prepare the muscles, prepare the joints, prevent injury, prepare the ligaments, prepare the mind, prepare the cardiovascular system
What are the 3 phases of a warm up?
Pulse raiser (cardiovascular phase), stretching and sport specific
Why do we do a cardiovascular phase?
To gradually raise the heart rate towards the working heart rate. Take various forms depending on activity
How long should a cardiovascular phase take?
10-15 minutes depending on the activity
What are static stretches?
Easy, on the spot stretching
What is a dynamic stretch?
Stretches that use movement specific to a sport, gradually increasing in your reach and speed
What is the sport specific phase?
To practice the skills of an activity
How many phases are there in a cool down?
2 - light cardio exercise phase & stretching phase
Why is the pulse raising phase important during a warm up
You want to gradually increae heart rate and body tempurature. Done through gentle aerobic activity
Why is the stretching phase of a warm up important?
Helps improve range of movement (flexibility), mobilieses joints and maintains body tempurature
How long should a warm up last?
10-20 minutes, involves gradually increasing the intensity
