Soc 26 - Types of Skill Practice, Guidance and Feedback Flashcards
What is an open skill
A skill that is always changing. It is affected by the environment, decision making, externally paced
Example of an open skill
Dribble in football
What is a closed skill
A stable environment, not affected by the environment, skill is habitual and self pased
Example of a closed skill
Free throw in basketball
What is a basic skill
Easy, low in concentration skill. Little information to process and few decisions to make
Example of a basic skill
Chest pass in netball
What is a complex skill
High concentration skill. Information to be processed, decisions to be made quicker
Example of a complex skill
Serve in tennis
What is a low organisation skill
Uncomplicated, stimple stages. Can break skill down into different phases
Example of a low organisation skill
Set shot in basket ball
What is a high organisation skill
Skill with complicated phases, large amounts of attention and difficult to break down
Example of a high organisation skill
Somersauot
What is massed practice
Practice until learnt: without taking a break, intense and mentally challenging
What is distribed practice
Practiced over several sessions, plenty of rests between - low experience players
What is a fixed practice
Practiced in a single situation: over and over until perfected and a closed skill. Set shot
What is a variable practice
Practise skills in a variety of different situations, adapt to different situations : open skills
Guidance
Information to aid the learning of a skill; can be given visually, verbally, manually or mechanically
What is visual guidance
Coach showing the technique of the ‘perfect’ model. They can show a video and it is easy to understand but harder to show the difficult skills
What is verbal guidance
Harder to understand, but important for harder skills. Can be provided during a performance and is ideal for open skills. Effective when used in conjunction with other forms of guidance. Good for advanced performers
What is manual guidance
Using physical contact to help a performer complete a skill. Gives ‘feel’ for movement and also good for all abilities
What is mechanical guidance
Using equipment to help a performer complete a skill. Very effective in early stages of learning and helps the learner gain kinaesthetic of movement, helps build confidence
Feedback
Information received before, during or after a performance about the performance
What is intrinsic feedback
Comes from the performers themselves. experienced performers will know when something is right or wrong
What is extrinsic feedback
Comes from an external source. Beginners will benefit greatly and it can motive them to improve
What is concurrent feedback
Feedback given during the performance. Can be acted on immediately and communicated from sidelines from coach / manager
What is terminal feedback
Provided at the end of the game. This feedback will be aimed at being more reflective and giving an overview of the performance
