What is an anabolic steroids?
Drugs that mimics the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscle growth
Advantages of anabolic steroids?
Enhances performance, increase muscle mass, development of bone growth. Therefore increases strength and an athlete can train harder and recover quicker
Disadvantages of anabolic steroids?
Increases risk of muscle injury, increased risk of heart attack and strokes, high blood pressure and even death
What athlete would use an anabolic steroid?
Weight lifting because it allows the athlete to train harder and longer and more
What is a beta blocker?
Drugs used to control heart rate, and have a calming and relaxing effect
Advantages of beta blockers?
Can help target sports where steadiness and precision are required because they reduce heart rate
Disadvantages of beta blockers?
Nausea, diarrohea, tiredness, depression, insomnia and nightmares
What sport would use beta blockers?
Snooker and archer to get precision and calmer heart rate
What are narcotics and analgesics?
Drugs that effect mood or behaviour including drowsiness and relieving pain
Advantages of narcotics and analgesics?
These drugs act by depressing the central nervous system and relief the pain of an injury. Allow players to keep playing
Disadvantages of narcotics and analgesics
Loss of co-ordination, balance, concentration, and emotional effects. Also increase the chance of a long term injury
What athlete would use narcotics and analgesics
Any athlete which is very physically demanding, for example, american football as they constantly get injured
What are duiretics?
Drugs which elevate urine production
What are the advantages of durietics ?
Can help performers that need to loose weight. Can also be used to reduce the concentration of any other banned substances that may be present in your urine
What are the disadvantges of durietcs ?
Dehydration, dizziness, muscle cramps, head aches and nausea
What athlete would use duiretics?
A boxer who needs to loose weight for a weigh off if they need to be in a certain weight boundary and need to be below
What are peptide hormones?
Increase in rate of production of red blood cells.
What are the advantages of peptide hormones!
Increase muscle growth, assists recovery, allow body to carry extra oxygen and disperse waste products and lactic acid
What are the disadvantages of peptide hormones?
Blood becomes thicker, making it harder to pass through smaller capillaries meaning a chance of heart attack or stroke
What athlete would use peptide hormones?
Power lifter as they need to train harder and build more muscle
What are growth hormones?
Drugs used to increase muscle development, strength and size
What are the advantages of growth hormones?
Increases muscles strength and size and not as many side effects as steroids
What are the disadvantages of growth hormones?
Minimal side effects, detected in blood test and not your urine
What athlete would use growth hormones?
Power lifter, body builder so they can train as musch as possible and build more muscle and strength
What are stimulants ?
Drugs that have an effect on the central nervous system
What are the advantages of stimulants?
Increases alertness, enabling people to think quicker, overcome tiredness, reduces effects of lactic acid on muscles
What are the disadvantages of stimulants?
Insomnia, irregular / increase heart beat rate, high blood pressure and addiction
What athlete would use stimulants?
Table tennis, tennis as they need quick reactions to replay shots to the opponant
