Soc 15 - The Structure of The Heart Flashcards
What is the cardio vascular system
System formed by our heart and blood vessels. Cardio = heart and vascular = blood vessels
3 main functions of cardiovascular system
Transport oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients around the body
Help clot the blood
Controls body temperature
What is vascular shunting
Process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from inactive areas; achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction
Vasodilation
When the lumen of the vessels leading to the working muscles gets wider allowing more blood flow
Vasoconstriction
Lumen in Vessels leading to organs shrink down and narrow the lumen allowing less blood to get to organs
1st stage of direction of blood flow
Blood at lungs and diffusion occurs - blood is now oxygenated
2nd stage of direction of blood flow
Blood travels back into the heart through the pulmonary vein
3rd stage of direction of blood flow
Blood then travels through the left atrium and biscupid valve
4th stage of direction of blood flow
Blood then travels through left ventricle and the semilunar valve
5th stage of direction of blood flow
Blood leaves the aorta out to the working muscles. Diffusion occurs as oxygen is delivered to the working muscles, blood then travels back now Deoxygenated
6th stage of direction of blood flow
Deoxygenated blood enters back through the vena cava
7th stage of direction of blood flow
Blood then goes through the right atrium and then through the triscupid valve
8th stage of direction of blood flow
Blood then travels through the right ventricle then semilunar valves
9th stage of direction of blood flow
Blood leaves the heart through the pulmonary artery to the lungs
