Skin lecture 1 Flashcards
what percentage of human body weight is skin?
16%
functions of skin?
- protection via keratin production
- excretion (salt, water, organic waste)
- Vit D3 synthesis
- receptors
- lipid storage
Cutaneous layers of the skin?
Epidermis
Dermis
Layers of the epidermis, thick skin?
(superficial to deep)
stratum corneum stratum lucidum stratum granulosum stratum spinosum stratum basale
3 layers of skin?
epidermis
dermis
hypodermis
function of keratinocytes?
produce keratin to protect from abrasion
how is the dermis connected to epidermis?
Desmosomes
What makes up the dermis?
Dense irregular connective tissue
collagen and elastin
blood vessels, nerves, lymphatics
Functions and features of subcutaneous hypodermis?
Loose connective adipose tissue
connects skin to the rest of the body
energy storage
large blood vessels and sensory receptors
What happens to the skin during ageing?
drier epidermis
reduced blood supply
decreased perspiration
less invaginations at the epidermis/dermis border
What is the surface area of skin?
1.5-2m2
what tissue dominates in epidermis?
Epithelial - stratified squamous epithelium
Thick skin vs thin skin?
Thick skin has a greater epidermal layer and no hair. mainly on palms and soles. Thin skin is everywhere else.
