How is trip lowered? Automatically or Manually?
Automatically as soon as cab is activated
However it needs to be reset before EMY brake will release
How is trip powered on a Siemens?
Air
Electrical
or Mechanical?

How do we know trip has been activated and how can it be reset?
Trip reset switch will illuminate RED
RESET procedure:
- Train must be stationary
- MC must be in 0 (COAST)
- Turn trip reset switch to the right and it will spring back
What is the purpose of the Towing unit?
It reads to and from the brake unit during a
NON- ELECTRICAL rescue
The Isolation Cock needs to be in line with the pipe
Must be in Brake Pipe Mode (key switch in ‘I’ to be active

When operating a Brake Pipe Rescue using the Towing unit how must the trains be coupled?
Electrically
Pneumatically
Mechanically?
Must NOT be coupled Elecetrically
When Brake pipe mode is in Off position what does that mean?
Brake system on train is operating normally
(Not in rescue, not using towing unit)
When in Read Mode (Towing unit operation) what is the Brake PIPE pressure when brake step in 0 (coast)
480 kPa
When in Write Mode (TU1) what are the Brake PIPE pressures at each step of the brake zone?
0 (COAST) is 550 kPa
Pressure Gradually decreases as you move to higher braking effort
Emergency brake is 300 kPa or less
What is the purpose of the Towing cock?
It is used to reduce the Main Res pressure between the Siemens and the Comeng when performing a Train Rescue
(So Comeng safety valve doesn’t activate due to overcharging)
Main Res pressure when Towing cock is used?
700 kPa
(This will cause uncouple light to flash in all cabs)
Gauges in all other cabs on Siemens will show normal MR pressure (850-1000)
What are the 2 valves on the B side of a coupler?
Extend Air
Retract Air
What can we check to ensure correct coupling ?
(Nuts and dicks)
Dick is in
Nut is out
What is the purpose of the manual valve on the coupler?
To completely isolate the whole pneumatic system of the Dellner coupler
What is the purpose of the extend air valve on the coupler?
Stops the electric coupler doors from opening when coupling
What is the purpose of the manual valve retract air on the coupler?
Stops the doors from retracing when uncoupling
What is the purpose of the rip cord on the coupler?
Allows for mechanical uncoupling (not used by drivers unless emergency )
What is the purpose of the electrical coupler handle on top of coupler?
Allows for manual electrical uncoupling (not used by drivers) to uncouple)
What is the purpose of the resistor grids?
Used for ED braking
They dissipate heat and energy that cannot be returned to overhead wires
What does traction Inverter do?
Converts 1500 v DC to Variable 3 phase AC for the traction motors
Controls the operation of the Holding brake
What is inside the High Voltage Container?
Motors : RHS - HSCB & Ground switch
LHS - BCU
Trailers : RHS - AUX eq.
LHS - BCU
What does the Brake Control Unit do? (BCU)
It sends electrical signals to the Brake Module to apply / release brakes with pneumatic pressure
It sends electrical signals to the Traction Motors for ED braking
Where are the brake Modules located?
Near wheels 3 & 7
What functions does the Brake Module perform? *
Acronym : SPACE in BW
S- service braking
P - park brakes
A - air suspension system
C - cleaning air supply to brakes
E - EMY braking
B - brake blending
W - wheel slide control
(All things to do with air supply to the wheels)
Where are the sanders and the sanders I. C.?
Sanders: wheels 3 & 6 on motors
I.C . A side of motors near the brake module
Wheels 2 & 3; 6& 7 on T cars
I.C on B side of T cars
Next to battery container
Where is the Main res located?
No 2 end on both M and T cars
What does the air compressor supply air to?
Braking and suspension systems
How do you know if compressor pressure switch is isolated?
It is visible - it sticks right out at a 90 degree angle
When not isolated it cant be seen
Where is the self excite button?
On the Static inverter container T car
A side
What do SIVS do?
Convert 1500vDC to 400vAC (3 phase)
as well as 230 v AC (single phase)
Then converted further to 110v DC
to charge batteries, Safety Loop & other safety critical functions
What is the purpose of the self- excite button?
It allows for manual start up of the Static inverter when not enough battery supply
What is Auxiliary container for?
It contains control equipment for the SIV system & BCU for the trailer car
Battery box location and purpose? *
T car B side
4 doors
8 batteries inside (2 per door)
Used for auxiliary power supply
- Used to raise pantos
step light

How are pantos raised? What power? *

What does the sanders I.C isolate?
The compressed air from going to the sanders box
How do we reset the trip?
Key in and on
Trip lowered light illuminates
Put reverser to a driving position
MC to 0 (coast)
How do we bypass the trip if it fails?
MC to B6
Selector to NEUTRAL
Master key to OFF
Key out
Operate Trip bypass key switch to I
Remove key
Reactivate cab
Check if EMY brake releases with selector to driving position & MC in O
If it goes to holding brake then it ok
Of not
Safety loop must be bypassed also
When will happen if the MC is in B1 or B2 when stationary?
The Vicers acknowledgement button will flash after 35 seconds
How do we reset VICERS?
0 km/h
MC in 0
Remain stationary for 10 sec
Push VICERS button
How do we isolate VICERS WHEN TRIP or Safety Loop is bypassed?
It self isolates in these situations
When do we isolate VICERS with the key switch?
When
A fault indicator remains illuminated
A VICERS fault cannot be reset and train cannot move
If FMP instructs driver to do so
What indications do you get that VICERS has been isolated?
VICERS fault light illuminates
If a local traction system fault light illuminates what CB has tripped?
Train stable
HSCB
Light control
When testing VICERS on a prep how many times will the safety loop fault light flash
(& BC rise to EMY pressure and lower to holding pressure) ?

What indication will we get that Main res pressure has fallen to 700kPa?
What would we check?
The red uncouple button flashes in all cabs
