Above wheel 5, B side no.2 end
27
What must be operational for the air compressor to run? What power does it run on?
A motor alternator must be working for the air compressor to run Air compressor runs on 1500vDC
28
What does the control Riz supply compressed air to?
Supplies air to operate the electropneumatic valves in the main equipment case (to close line breakers) Trip
29
Where is the wheel Slip unit located? How do we know it is energized?
Has a green light can only be viewed from A side
30
What does the compressor governor I.C. do?
Isolates flow of main res, air pressure to the compressor governor if it becomes defective
31
What is the role of the compressor governor?
It monitors the pressure within the main reservoir pipe and will start or stop according to the upper or lower limits.
32
What does the control res out I.C do?
It isolates the flow of compressed air from the control res. to the electropneumatic valves in the main equipment case, and the line breaker case
33
What does the hand release wire attached to the hand release valve on the brake unit do when it is pulled?
The valve will open, causing brake cylinder air to exhaust to atmosphere Only used when there’s a defect that requires it
34
What voltage does the main equipment case auxiliary equipment case and line breaker case contain?
1500vDC
35
What is housed inside the main equipment case?
Various electrical switches, relays and circuit breakers For equipment, such as compressor, contactor, and governor and motor alternator controls Also, the camshaft used to control the powering and Rheo breaking circuits of the motor
36
What is inside the auxiliary equipment case?
Various relays, circuit breakers and electronics for the operation of axillary equipment, including the motor alternator
37
What is inside the line breaker case?
Contactors that open and close the 1500 V DC circuit to the traction motors
38
What is the Panto interlock switch and Auxiliary Isolating Switch??
Panto switch- Isolate to the supply of MR air to the Panto, causing it to lower on that motor. It must be turned prior to the AUX iso switch being operated AUX ISO SWITCH - Isolates, 1500 V DC supply to the MA and the air compressor
39
What is on the left-hand side of the line break in case and what does it do?
Main switch - it isolates 1500vDC supply to the line breakers & traction motors
40
Is a driver able to operate the auxiliary ISO switch, the Panto interlock switch or the main switch at any time?
No
41
Where are the bogie brake isolating Cocks located
To the RHS of each bogie (close to wheels 3 & 7) of all cars
42
What power does the train lined train cable supply through the couplers?
110v DC essential to the operation of the train
43
What is the emergency lighting container and where is it located?
Located on B side the 1st equipment case which contains 12 v batteries for back up emergency lighting for up to 2 hours. LEDs indicate Green if receiving a trickle charge Red if low
44
What does the motor alternator operate on? What is it power?
1500vDC which drives an alternator to supply 415vAC A transformer and rectifier in the MA supplies the 110 V DC to operate the CONTROL and TRAIN LINED circuits
45
How is the motor alternator protected from over speeding?
It has an overspeed trip
46
How is the Westcode motor alternator reset
Fire a round flat knob protruding beneath the outside and housing
47
What does the 415 V AC power?
Saloon, lighting Headlights Air Conditioners Traction cooling fan
48
What is located on the left-hand side of the main equipment case?
Load compensation, iso, cock
49
What is the purpose of the load compensation isolating cock?
It controls the flow of air from the air suspension to the main equipment case to adjust the traction power, and Rheo breaking of the train in proportion to the changes in weight due to passenger loading
50
Which isolating Cox next to the main equipment case are hidden by the air dry system?
Does a doors b & door system. Door systems isolates, both doors A and B sides
51
Where is the air dry and filter system located and what does it do?
Located adjacent to the brake unit it is fitted with a PLC, to operate the dryer and filter which removes moisture and contaminants from the compressed air system
52
What are the seven components of the brake unit?
Seven. Step relay. Variable load valve Restricted application, magnet valve (m cars) Hand release wire Restricted application, limiting valve and ball check valve Dump valve Release ensuring valve triple valve
53
What are the two isolating cooks behind the brake unit on the corresponding pipes?
BP to triple valve, IC MR to 7-step relay IC
54
Where is the control res IN isolating cock and what does it do?
Located on the left-hand side of the brake unit, and it controls main res air flow to the control res
55
Where is the main res located and what is it for?
Number 1 end in the center of the motor cars It receives a large volume of compressed air from the compressor
56
Where is the auxiliary res located What does it do?
It’s in front of the main res and it stores a finite supply of compressed air to feed into the brake cylinders during automatic air braking. It needs to be recharged fully for a full brake application to be available.
57
What do the main res delivery isolating cocks do?
Isolate main res from the main res pipe should the main res rupture.
58
Where is the supplementary & Aux res located?
A side in the centre of all trailers it contains main res air fed from main res pipe Aux does same thing as in the motor
59
Where are the door Iso Cocks located on a trailer car?
A side doors on A side adjacent to no. 2 wheel B side doors and doors system are are on B side (No. 1 Bogie brake I.C is also next to it)
60
What differences are there in the location of the Iso cocks and equipment between a knorr and a Westcode Motor?
61
Control Res IN iso cock location on a KNORR MOTOR?
In front of the brake unit
62
Doors A, Doors B and Doors systems I.Cs Knorr Motor?
Left of the brake unit
63
What are the 3 extra reservoirs on a Knorr motor?
APES All in same section PRE- control res (behind brake unit) EP res (to the side of the supplementary res on brake unit side) & supplementary res is also on the motor in front of the MR to the side of brake unit
64
What are the differences on a Knorr trailer compared to a Westcode?
Disc brakes Brake unit and Iso cocks sealed and covered It has 2 extra reservoirs - pre control res (behind brake unit) - EP res (behind supplementary res) Aux res is smaller (no.2 end of brake unit)
65
What is the function of the pre-control res?
It matches the air pressure and volume of the auxiliary res to ensure that during an emergency application of the brakes there is a 10% increase in brake cylinder pressure on top of the seven step EP brake cylinder pressure
66
What is the purpose of the supplementary res?
It stores air from the main Reservoir to supply air to the brake cylinders
67
What is the purpose of the EP Reservoir?
It’s stores it from the main res Which has been reduced by the EP pressure reducing valve for the operating pressure on the 7 step relay Valve
