Shapes of molecules: NO LONE PAIRS Flashcards
What do solid lines mean?
= lay on the plane
What does a solid wedge mean?
= bond is coming out the plane
What does a dotted wedge tell us?
= projecting back behind the plane
What is electron pair repulsion theory?
= the shape of the molecule is determined by:
= electron pairs surrounding the central atom
= pairs of electrons repel all of the other electron pairs
= electron pairs move as far apart from eachother
What is the shape of molecule if the central atom has 2 bonds?
= linear structure- straight line
= angle between both bonds is 180
What is the shape of a molecule if the central atom has 3 covalent bonds?
= arrange themselves in a triangle- trigonal planar
= the bond angle between them is 120 degrees
What is the shape of a molecule if the central atom has 4 covalent bonds?
= tetrahedral
= all the bond angles are 109.5 degrees
What is the shape of a molecule if the central atom has 5 covalent bonds?
= trgonal bipyrimidial
= trigonal: 3 atoms on central plane form a triangle
bipyrimidial: forms 2 pyrimaid shapes with 2 atoms
What is the shape of a molecule if the central atom has 5 covalent bonds?
= octahedral
