Markownikoff's Rule for Electrophilic Addition to Alkenes UNSYMETTRICAL ALKENES Flashcards
1
Q
What is markownikoff’s rule?
A
= hydrogen halide reacts with an alkene asymetrical
= the hydrogen atom of the halide is more likley to bond to the carbin atm that has a higher number of hydrogen atoms- major product, more of it is formed
2
Q
Why do we have major and minor products?
A
= carbon cation intermediate is unstable- exists for short period of time
= stability depends on how many r groups are found
= primary, secondaery or teritary
= teritary > secondary > primary in stability
= exists for a longer period of time
