Hydration of Alkenes Flashcards
What is formed from the hydration of alkenes?
= alcohols
= water is in the form of steam
= phosphoric acid catalayst
= temperature 300 degrees and pressure 60 atmospheres
=
What is the mechanism for this reaction?
= the pair of electrons in the pi bond are attracted to the H+ ion from the acid catalyst
= this forms a covalent bond
= there is now a positive carbon cation intermediate, a water molecule has an oxygen with lone pair of electrons, the carbon cation intermediate is atracted to the lone pair of electrons and forms a covalent bond with a posiitve oxygen intermediate
= the bond between a hydrogen and oxygen breaks, with both electrons going to the oxygen, this is the H+ ion
