carboxylic acids Flashcards
What are they?
= these are hydrocarbons with a C=O and O-H group
= ends in anoic acids and is always found at the ends of chain so specification isn’t requried
What if there are 2 COOH groups?
= doic acid
What kind of acid is it?
= weak acids in water + slightly dissociate but they are strong enough to displace co2 from carbonates
What are the solubility of these acids?
= smaller can dissolve in water in all proportions- C4
= can form hydrogen bonding with water
How do we test for carboxlylic acids?
= add sodium hydrogen carbonate
= efferscence should be seen indicates a positive test
What happens when the carboyxlic acid reacts with a metal?
= salt + hydrogen
What happens when the carboxylic acid reacts with an alkali?
= salt + water
What happens when an acid reacts with a carbonate?
= salt + water + co2
