reflux, distillation, fractional distillation Flashcards
What is reflux?
= allows complete reaction
= volatile reactants, heated and evaporated, the condensor on top cools down the vapour
= reactants re-enter the pear shaped flask continues to react
= orange to green has finished
= seperate using distillation
What do anti bumping granulles do?
= absorbs energy
= smooth boiling
Where does water move in and out?
= at the bottom
= out from the top
=
What is at the top of the condensor?
= open non sealed top
= where reactabts are added
`
Why should the top of the funnel never sealed?
= prevents building pressure
What is distillation?
= used to seperate 2 liquids
= prevent completion
= reagants are gently heated to boiling point of one of the desired products
= vaporizes whilst others remains in flask
= condenses through a condensor, back into a liqud at a seperate flask
Why do we need a therometer?
= measures temperature of vapour at the entrance of the condensor
Why does the beaker and flasj containing the distilled is in a water bath with ice?
= keep liquid
= prevent evaporation
