Oxidation of aldehdes and ketons Flashcards
1
Q
What is formed from the oxidising of an aldehyde?
A
= a carboxylic acid
= cannot be oxidised any further
= heated under reflux
2
Q
What is formed from oxidising a ketone?
A
= nothing
= ketons cannot be oxifised
3
Q
How do we test to distinguish between ketones and aldehydes?
A
aldehydes:
= heat with fehlings solution (A+B)
= blue to brick red precipitate- positive
= negative with ketons
ketones:
= heat with tollens reagant
= colourless solution, silver pure mirror is formed
