Atomic Structure: Atomic Orbitals. Flashcards
What is the electron configiration in gcse?
2,8,8,18,
As we move further away from the nuclues what happens?
= energy of the levels increase
= close- low energy
= further- high energy,
What is the number given to each shell called?
= principle quantum number or ‘n’.
e.g:
= shell 1 = n1
= shell 2 = n2.
How can we work out the maximum amount of electrons in a particular shell?
= 2n^2.
What is the atomic orbital?
= region around the nucleus that can hold up to 2 electrons with opposite spins.
= electrons can have a up spin or down spin.
.
What is each energy level made from?
= sub levels
What is each energy level made from?
= sub levels
What are sub-levels split into?
= orbitals.
What are the letters of the sub levels?
s,p,d,f.
What is an electron considered to be?
= cloud of negative charge
= negative charge cloud has the shape of the orbital occupied by the elctron.
What shape does the ‘s’ orbital have and where is it found?
= spherical.
= every electron shell has a singular s orbital.
What shape does the ‘p’ orbital have and where is it found?
= 8 shape (sideways, diagononal and straight).
= every shell but the first one contains 3 p orbitals.
Where are ‘d’ obitals found?
= every shell apart from 1 and 2 have 5 orbitals.
Where are ‘f’ orbitals found?
= shell 4 and above has 7 f orbitals.
What is the max electrons in shell 1 and orbitals?
2 electrons
1 orbital.
