Atomic Structure: Mass Spectrometer (GRAPHS). Flashcards
1
Q
What do the peaks of the graphs tell us?
A
= How many isotopes an element has
2
Q
How can we calculate the percentage abundance of the isotopes if we are given the r.a.m and relative isotopic mass? (ALGEBRA)
A
= E.G: Boron has a Ar of 10.8/
= it has 2 isotopes B(10) and B(11)
= calculate percentage abundance
(10x X) + (11 x 1 -X)
and solve the equation.
3
Q
How can we calculate the percentage abundance of the isotopes if we are given the r.a.m and relative isotopic mass? (NUMBER LINE)
= only for 2 isotopes
A
= Distance from the isotope to the AR
= DItsnance of both isotopes
= both divided by total distance.
