Q

How are esters hydrolysed with an acid?

A

= reagants: dilute acid hcl
= heat under reflux
= reversed reaction of formation of esters, forms a COOH acid an an alcohol
= does not give good yield of product

Q

How are esters hydrolysed using sodium hydroxide?

A

= reafant: dilite sodiu hydroxde
= heat under reflux
= reaction gores to completion- use excess sodium hydroxide
= forms a carboxlyic acid
= cooh acid anion can be attacked by nucleophiles and is not reversible
