Fermentation: Flashcards
1
Q
What is the equation for fermentation?
A
= glucose ==> ethanol + carbon dioxide
2
Q
What are the conditions for this reaction?
A
= yeast is needed
= anaearobic- oxygen would lead to the oxidisisation of the alcohol- forms a COOh acid
respiration- no oxgen, sealed
= 30-40 degrees celcius
= low temperature, lower rate as if they were to high the enzymes would denature
3
Q
What are the advantages?
A
= renewable glucose from sugar cane
= low tech/ low cost
= easily accesible
=
4
Q
What are the disadvantages?
A
= batch process
= labour intensive
= ethanol needs to be distilled afterwatds to be used
= ethics
