Effect of lone pairs on shape of the molecule Flashcards
1
Q
How does lone pairs affect the shape of molecules?
A
= lone pairs repel more than bonding pairs
= extra repulsion: decreases other bond angles by 2.5 degrees
= the lone pairs count as a bonding pair in the total
2
Q
If there is 3 bonding pairs and 1 lone pair what does the shape look like?
A
= tetrahedral with lone pairs on the top
= degree is 109.5-2.5= 107 degrees
3
Q
If there is 2 bonding pairs and 2 lone pairs what does the shape look like?
A
= non linear
= v shaped molecule
