Oxidation of secondary and teritary alcohols: Flashcards
1
Q
What happens when we oxidise a secondary alcohol?
A
= using acidified pottasium di-chromate
= a ketone and water is produced
= turns from orange to green
= ketons cannot be oxidised any further
= heat under reflux
= ketoness have a low boiling point than alcohols
2
Q
During oxidation what happens?
A
= remove a hydrogen atom from the carbon bonded to the OH
= there is another hydrogen atom to remove
=
3
Q
Why cant we oxidise ketons and teritary alcohols?
A
= there is no hydrogen bonded to the carbon forming the OH bond
4
Q
Can we oxidise teritary alcohols ?
A
N.o.
