"Reaction between Alkenes and Sulfuric Acid Flashcards
What does this mechanism form?
= carbon prefix
= hydrogen sulfate
what does the sulfuric acid loook like?
= H-OSO2OH
= partial positive hydrogen and partial negative oxygen
what is the mechanism?
= the pair of electrons in the pi bond of the double covalent bond is attracted to the partial positive hydrogen and forms a covalent bond, but as hydrogen can only have 1 covalent bond the bond between the hydrogen and OSO3H group breaks, with both electrons going to the oxygen
= the :OSo3H hroup os attracted to the carbon intermediate cation, donates electrons and forms a covalanr bond
What is stage 2 of this reaction?
= when you add water to the products of stage 1
= forms an alcohol and sulfuric acid
