Additional polymers Flashcards
What 2 catergories can we divide polymers?
= additional polymers
= condensation polymers
What are polymers?
= large molecules
= joining together thousands of small identical molecules- monomers
What are the monomers that additional polymers are made from?
= alkenes
What does polymerisation require?
= high temperatures
= high pressure
= catalyst
What happens when alkenes form a polymer?
= double bond in the alkene breaks
= and joins one monomer to the oter=
How are these polymers named?
= using the word poly (name of monmer in brackets-
What does the polymer not have compared to the alkene?
= no double bonds
= in carbon backbone
= alkanes
= contain alrge c-c and c-h bonds- non polar and strong, difficult to break
= unreactive molecules
= can exist in environment for a long tme
What is the repeating unity?
shows arrangement of atoms that are repeated in a polymer chain
= take any two carbon atoms plus atoms below and above
= draw square brackets
= draw covalwnt bonds from the carbon atoms extenfin rhgouh sqaure vrakcets
= show how many
or n
How do we draw the original monomoer?
= take any 2 carbon atoms and the atoms above and below
= replace single bond between carbon atoms with double bond
What is the role of plasticisers?
= poly(chloroethane) PVC
= rigid, used to make plastic pipes
= if we add plastisicer
= priduce flexible pv: soft, used to make flooring and insolution in electric cables, polumer chains are attracted togetner by intermolecylae forces of attractio- dipole dipole and vandwerall force
s= plasticiers fit in betwen polymer chains- causes chains to move further apart and weakens intermolecular forces and move over each other,
