Un tempo, in Giappone, viveva un principe che non aveva ancora trovato moglie. Suo padre era molto in pena: “Devi affrettarti, figlio mio; la mia fine si avvicina e tu diventerai imperatore. Ma potrai salire al trono soltanto se troverai moglie”.
Once, in Japan, there lived a prince who had not yet found a wife. His father was very much in pain: “You must hurry up, my son; my end is near and you will become emperor. But you will only be able to ascend the throne if you find a wife ”.

Il principe decise di non contrariare suo padre e si mise a cercare una fanciulla adatta a diventare sua sposa. I saggi consiglieri gli suggerirono di radunare a corte tutte le ragazze del regno, perché così sarebbe stata più facile la scelta
The prince decided not to upset his father and set about looking for a girl suitable to become his wife. The wise counselors advised him to gather all the girls of the kingdom to court, so that the choice would be easier.
“Quella che colpirà il mio cuore, sarà la mia sposa”, si disse il principe.

Il giorno stabilito, giunsero a palazzo centinaia di nobili fanciulle, agghindate a festa. Tra loro c’era anche una serva, Kaori, vestita umilmente e senza alcun titolo nobiliare.
On the appointed day, hundreds of noble girls came to the palace, all dressed up for their festivities. Among them there was also a servant, Kaori, humbly dressed and without any noble title.
“Non andare, purtroppo non puoi competere con le altre, non è il tuo destino”, le aveva detto la madre.

Ma Kaori non l’aveva ascoltata: “Anche se non sarò la prescelta, almeno vivrò con la gioia di aver incontrato il principe”..

Quando tutte le fanciulle si furono radunate, il principe lanciò una sfida:

“Darò a ciascuna di voi un seme e colei che fra sei mesi mi porterà il fiore più bello sarà la mia sposa, la futura imperatrice”.

Anche Kaori prese il suo seme e lo piantò in un vaso di argilla: lo innaffiava, si accertava che non subisse sbalzi di temperatura, che ricevesse luce a sufficienza.
Kaori also took her seed and planted it in a clay pot: she watered it, made sure that it did not suffer from sudden changes in temperature, that it received enough light.
Purtroppo tutti i suoi sforzi erano vani: passavano i mesi e dalla terra non spuntava proprio nulla.
Unfortunately, all her efforts were in vain: the months passed and nothing sprouted from the earth.
Nonostante ciò, la ragazza non demordeva e continuava a curare il semino, nella speranza che nascesse almeno germoglio.
Despite this, the girl did not give up and she continued to take care of the seed, in the hope that at least sprout would be born.
sei mesi trascorsero e giunse il tempo di tornare a corte a mostrare la piantina nata da ciascun seme.

La madre di Kaori cercò di farla desistere: “Non andare, te ne prego. Cosa penserà il principe vedendo il tuo vaso vuoto?”.
Kaori’s mother tried to make her give up: “Don’t go, please. What will the prince think when he sees your empty vase? “.
Ma la fanciulla non si perse d’animo e la rassicurò, dicendole che sarebbe partita ugualmente, per mostrare al principe il frutto del suo amore paziente.
