“Greetings, Amphitheos.”
(Δικαιοπόλεως δὲ ταῦτα εἰπόντος, ὁ Ἀμφίθεος τρέχει ἔτι.)
(Though Dikaiopolis has said this, Amphitheos keeps running.)
ΑΜΦΙ. μήπω γε, Δικαιόπολι.
AMPHITHEOS “Not yet, Dikaiopolis.”
δεῖ γάρ με φεύγοντ’ ἐκφυγεῖν Ἀχαρνέας.
“For I must flee and escape from the Akharnians.”
ΔΙΚ. τί δ’ ἐστίν;
DIK. “What’s up?”
ΑΜΦΙ (looks around anxiously) ἐγὼ μὲν δεῦρό σοι σπονδὰς φέρων ἔσπευδον.
AMP. “I was hurrying here bringing a treaty for you.”
ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἔλαθον τοὺς Ἀχαρνέας.
“But I didn’t evade the Akharnians.”
οἱ δὲ γέροντες ἐκεῖνοι, Μαραθωνομάχαι ὄντες, εὐθὺς αἰσθόμενοί με σπονδὰς φέροντα, ἐβόησαν πάντες, …
“Those old men, being fighters at the battle of Marathon, the moment they spotted me bringing the treaty, all shouted…
“ὦ μιαρώτατε, σπονδὰς φέρεις, Λακεδαιμονίων τὴν ἡμετέραν τῆν ὀλεσάντων;”
“‘You foulest of creatures, are you bringing a treaty when the Spartans have destroyed our land?’”
καὶ λίθους ἔλαβον.
“And they took up stones.”
λίθους δὲ λαβόντων αὐτῶν, ἐγὼ ἔφευγον.
“And when they took up stones, I ran away.”
οἱ δ’ ἐδίωκον καὶ ἐβόων.
“But they were following me and shouting.”
ΔΙΚ. οἱ δ’ οὖν βοώντων.
DIK. “Let them shout, then.”
ἀλλὰ τὰς σπονδὰς φέρεις;
“But are you bringing the treaty?”
ΑΜΦΙ. ἔγωγέ φημι.
AMP. “I’ll say.”
(produces some sample bottles from his pouch) τρία γε ταυτὶ γεύματα.
“Here are three samples.”
(δίδωσιν αὐτῷ γεῦμά τι.)
(He gives him a taste.)
αὗται μέν εἰσι πεντέτεις.
“This is for five years.”
γεῦσαι λαβών.
“Take it and taste.”
ΔΙΚ. (δόντος Ἀμφιθέου, γεύεται Δικαιόπολις.)
(After Amphitheos has given it to him, Dikaiopolis tastes it.)
αἰβοῖ.
“Yuk!”
ΑΜΦΙ. τί ἐστιν;
AMP. “What is it?”
ΔΙΚ. οὐκ ἀρέσκουσί μοι ὅτι ὄζουσι παρασκευῆς νεῶν.
DIK. “It doesn’t please me because it smells of equipping of ships.”
ΑΜΦΙ. (δοὺς ἄλλο τι γεῦμα)
AMP. (Giving him another sample.)
σὺ δ’ ἀλλά, τασδὶ τὰς δεκέτεις, γεῦσαι λαβών.
“You take this ten-year treaty instead and taste it.”
ΔΙΚ. ὄζουσι χαὖται πρεσβέων εἰς τὰς πόλεις ὀξύτατα.
DIK. “It smells too—very pungently of ambassadors to the cities.”
ΑΜΦΙ. ἀλλ’ αὗταί εισι σπονδαὶ τριακοντούτεις κατὰ γῆν τε καὶ θάλατταν.
AMP. “But here is a thirty-year peace by both land and sea.”
ΔΙΚ. (joyfully) ὦ Διονύσια, αὗται μὲν ὄζους’ ἀμβροσίας καὶ νέκταρος.
DIK. “O festival of Dionysos, this smells of ambrosia and nectar.”
ταύτας ἥδιστ’ ἂν αἱροίμην, χαίρειν πολλὰ κελεύων τοὺς Ἀχαρνέας.
“I’ll choose this with the greatest pleasure, bidding a long farewell to the Akharnians.”
ἐγὼ δέ, πολέμου καὶ κακῶν παυσάμενος, ἄξειν μέλλω εἰσιὼν τὰ κατ’ ἀγροὺς Διονύσια.
“Ceasing from war and its evils I intend to go in and celebrate the country Dionysia.”
ΑΜΦΙ. (κατιδὼν προσιόντας τοὺς Άχαρνέας.)
AMP. (Seeing the Akharnians approaching)
ἐγὼ δὲ φεύξομαί γε τοὺς Ἀχαρνέας.
“And I’ll run away from the Akharnians.”
