DIKAIOPOLIS “But what’s this?”
(Dikaiopolis has come to the Assembly on the Pnyx, determined to make peace; he is surprised to find nobody there.) ΔΙΚΑΙΟΠΟΛΙΣ ἀλλὰ τί τοῦτο;
“For I know that a sovereign assembly is going to be held today.”
οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι κυρία ἐκκλησιά γενήσεσθαι μέλλει τήμερον.
“But the Pynx here is empty.”
ἀλλ’ ἐρῆμος ἡ Πνὺξ αὑτηί. (looks down into the agora).
“The men in the agora are talking to each other as they run from the rope all over the place.”
οἱ δὲ ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ, πρὸς ἀλλήλους διαλεγόμενοι, ἄνω καὶ κάτω τὸ σχοινίον φεύγουσιν.
“The prytaneis will come in late, I know it well.”
ὀψὲ δὲ οἱ πρυτάνεις ἥξουσιν, εὖ οἷδα.
“But nobody thinks how peace will happen …
ἀλλ’ ὅπως εἰρήνη ἔσται, φροτίζει οὐδείς, …
… but I always come into the assembly and sit down first, …
… ἐγὼ δ’ ἀεὶ πρῶτος εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν εἰσιὼν καθίζω, …
… and on my own I look out to the country, loving peace but hating the city and longing for my own deme.”
… καὶ μόνος ὤν, ἀποβλέπω εἰς τὸν ἀγρόν, εἰρήνην φιλῶν, μισῶν μὲν ἄστυ, τὸν δ’ ἐμὸν δῆμον ποθῶν.
“But here are the prytaneis coming in late.”
(he pauses, and looks at the entrance) ἀλλ’ οἱ πρυτάνεις γὰρ οὑτοιὶ ὀψὲ ἥκουσι.
“This is precisely what I was saying.”
τοῦτ’ ἐκεῖνο ὃ ἐγὼ ἔλεγον.
HERALD (He makes a proclamation.)
(Proceedings begin; the herald invites speakers) ΚΗΡΥΞ (κηρύττει)
“Come forward to the front.”
πάριτ’ εἰς τὸ πρόσθεν.
”Come forward inside the purified place.”
πάριτ’ ἐντὸς τοῦ καθάρματος.
(All those present come forward to the front.)
(παρέρχονται εἰς τὸ πρόσθεν πάντες οἱ παρόντες.)
(When all have come forward, suddenly someone called Amphitheos addresses the herald.)
(παρελθόντων δὲ πάντων, ἐξαίφνης τὸν κήρυκα προσαγορεύει τις, Ἀμφίθεος ὀνόματι.)
AMPHITHEOS “Has anyone spoken yet?”
ΑΜΦΙΘΕΟΣ (anxiously) ἤδη τις εἶπε;
(Amphitheos waits, but the herald doesn’t answer.)
(ὁ μὲν Αμφίθεος μένει, ὁ δὲ κῆρυξ οὐκ ἀποκρίνεται.)
(As Amphitheos waits he continues his proclamation.)
(μένοντος δ’ Ἀμφιθέου, κηρύττει ἔτι.)
HER. “Who wishes to speak?”
ΚΥΡΥΞ τίς ἀγορεύειν βούλεται;
AMP. (Again he addresses the herald).
ΑΜΦΙ. (αὖθις τὸν κήρυκα προσαγορεύει)
“I do”
ἐγώ.
HER. “Who are you?”
ΚΥΡΥΧ τίς ὤν;
AMP. “Amphitheos.”
ΑΜΦΙ. Ἀμφίθεος.
HER. “Not a man?”
ΚΥΡΥΧ οὐκ ἄνθρωπος;
AMP. “No, but an immortal whom the gods have ordered to make a treaty with the Spartans.”
ΑΜΦΙ. οὔκ, ἀλλὰ ἀθάνατος, ὃν ἐκέλευσαν οἱ θεοὶ σπονδὰς ποιῆσαι πρὸς Λακεδαιμονίους.
“But since I’m an immortal, gentlemen, I don’t have the traveling expenses which I need.”
ἀλλ’ ἀθανάτῳ ὄντι, ὦνδρες, ἐφόδια οὐκ ἔστι μοι ἃ δεῖ.
“For the prytaneis don’t give them to me.”
οὑ γὰρ διδόασιν οἱ πρυτάνεις.
“So I hope to receive the travelling expenses…”
ἐλπίζω οὖν δέξεσθαι τὰ ἐφόδια —
A SPEAKER “Know well, Athenians, that I am well disposed to the people.”
ΡΗΤΩΡ ΤΙΣ εὖ ἴστε, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, ὅτι εὔνους εἰμὶ τῷ πλήθει.
“So don’t listen to this man unless he speaks about the war.”
μὴ οὖν ἀκούετε τούτου, εἰ μὴ περὶ πολέμος λέγοντος.
(The Athenians praise this and raise a clamor.)
(ἐπαινοῦσι καὶ θορυβοῦσιν οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι.)
HER. “Archers!”
ΚΥΡΥΞ οἱ τοξόται.
(The archers come in and lead off Amphitheos.)
(εἰσελθόντες οἱ τοξόται τὸν Ἀμφίθεον ἀπάγουσιν.)
(As they are leading him off, Dikaiopolis becomes angry.)
(ἀπαγόντων δὲ αὐτῶν, ὀργίζεται Δικαιόπολις.)
DIK. “Prytaneis, you wrong the assembly by leading off the man who was going to make a treaty for us.”
ΔΙΚ. ὧνδρες πρυτάνεις, ἀδικεῖτε τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, τὸν ἄνδρα ἀπάγοντες ὅστις ἡμῖν ἔμελλε σπονδὰς ποιήσειν.
HER. “Shut up and sit down.”
ΚΗΡΥΞ κάθιζε, σίγα.
DIK. “By Apollo, I won’t, but you do business about peace.”
ΔΙΚ. μὰ τὸν Ἀπόλλω, ἐγὼ μὲν οὔ, ἀλλὰ περὶ εἰρήνης χρηματίσατε.
HER. “The ambassadors from the king.”
ΚΗΡΥΞ οἱ πρέσβεις οἱ παρὰ βασιλέως.
