rev enzymes Flashcards
what is an enzyme
a protein molecule wich is a biological catalyst
what is the function of an enzyme
to help speed up the process of chemical reactions like digestion in the stomach, mouth and small intestine
what happens when an enzyme goes over its optimum temperature
the active site changes shape, meaning it can no longer react with its substrate. it can no longer go back to the shape that it was before so Is now just some protein
catalyst
speeds up chemical reactions
what molecule do enzymes act on
specific
what are enzymes affected by
pH and temperature
lock and key theory
the enzyme’s active site and the shape of the substrate molecule are complementary to one another. This allows the substrate to fit into the enzyme, like how a key would fit into a lock.
what can the enzymes change shape/go over optimum temperature
when there is extreme pH or temperature the enzymes active site changes shape and stops working.
