blood Flashcards
adaptations& explanations, substances and roles
what is plasma and what does it do
straw coloured liquid consisting of mostly water. It dissolves materials
what do red blood cells do
transport oxygen in the haemoglobin of cell from the lungs to the respiring cells for aerobic respiration
Adaptations of red blood cells (5)
Haemoglobin- it combines with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin to transport oxygen to respiring cells
no nucleus- to allow more space for haemoglobin to transport the oxygen
small and flexible- to squeeze through narrow capillaries and blood vessels for efficient transport
thin cell membrane- (one cell thick) to minimise distance of diffusion of oxygen molecules, allowing efficient diffusion to respiring cells.
biconcave- to increase surface area for diffusion of oxygen
what is the role of plasma for CO2
carbon dioxide waste that is produced from aerobic respiration is transported by plasma to the lungs for exhalation
role of plasma with digested food
transports it to respiring cells for the absorption and digestion in the form of simple sugars like glucose and amino acids
role of plasma considering urea
transports waste substances like urea out of the body. Transports urea to kidney for excretion
why does plasma transport hormones
to target organs to stimulate change
