What are reduced exocrine secretions?
Reduced secretions of pancreatic enzymes
Maldigestion, malnutrition and GI symptoms
What causes pancreatic insufficiency?
Cystic fibrosis
Chronic pancreatitis
Coeliac disease
Pancreatic tumours
What is the dietary advice for pancreatic insufficiency?
Distribute food intake between three main meals and 2-3 snacks
Avoid difficult to digest foods
Do not consume alcohol
Avoid reduced fat diets
What is pancreatin?
Supplements to compensate for reduced or absent pancreatic enzyme secretion
Assist with digestion of starch, fat, protein
How do you take pancreatin?
With meals / snacks
Pancreatin inactivated by gastric acid
EC preparations
Do not mix with excessively hot food or drinks
What are the side effects of pancreatin?
GI
Irritation of perioral skin and buccal mucosa
Fibrosing colonopathy in CF with high dose pancreatin
What are the contraindications of nutrizym?
Children aged 15 and under with cystic fibrosis
What are the counselling point for pancreatin?
Ensure adequate hydration at all times with high strength preparations
