What are the symptoms of scabies?
Intense itching, worse at night
Pimple like rash
Small thread like grey lines
What are the referral criteria for scabies?
Secondary bacterial infection caused by scratching
Treatment failure
Unclear diagnosis
Babies and children
What is used OTC for scabies?
Permethrin - 2+ (leave on for 8-12 hours)
Malathion - 6+ months (leave on for 24 hours)
Two treatments 7 days apart
Apply to entire body
Treat all close contacts at same time
What is the advice for scabies?
Avoid close contact with others
Adults and children can return to work or school after the first treatment
Itch will not stop straight away
Wash clothes and bed linen > 50 degrees at time of treatment
What are the symptoms of head lice?
Live lice
Nits
Itchy scalp
What are the OTC products for head lice?
Dimeticone - hedrin
Permethrin/malathion
Two applications 7 days apart to treat hatched lice
Alcoholic preparations more effective - avoid in asthma and eczema
Lotions or liquids for 8-12 hours overnight
What is the advice for head lice?
Wet combing
Do not use insecticides for prevention
Treat all affected at same time
Detection combing
What are the symptoms of threadworm
Perianal itching, worse at night
White cotton thread like worms
When do you refer threadworms?
Recent travel abroad
Secondary bacterial infection
Treatment failure
What OTC products are used for threadworms?
Mebendazole 2+ years - ovex
100mg single dose
Repeat dose 14 days later to prevent reinfection
Treat all family members at same time
Contraindicated in pregnant women
What is the advice for threadworms?
Good hygiene measures
Pregnant, breast feeding and under 2 years follow strict hygiene measures for at least 6 weeks
