Stimulates uterine smooth muscle, producing uterine contractions similar to those in spontaneous labor, stimulates mammary gland smooth muscle, facilitating lactation, has vasopressor and antidiuretic effects
Pitocin: Indications
Induction of labor at term, facilitation of uterine contractions at term, facilitation of threatened abortion, postpartum control of bleeding after expulsion of the placenta
Pitocin: Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, anticipated nonvaginal delivery, pregnancy
Pitocin: S. E.
Maternal- Coma, seizures, hypotension, hypocholoremia, hyponatremia, water intoxication, increased uterine motility, painful contractions, abruptio placentae, decreased uterine blood flow
Fetal- Intracranial hemorrhage, asphyxia, hypoxia, arrhythmias
Pitocin: Supplied
10 units/ml in 0.5 ml and 1 ml ampules, 1 ml and 10 ml vials
Pitocin: Dose
Postpartum Hemorrhage:
10 U IV infused at 20-40 milliunits/min
10 U IM after delivery of placenta

Use cautiously in first and second stages of labor.
